39th Annual Houston Scottish Highland Games & Celtic Festival, Houston, Texas
The Houston Highland Games & Festival was held May 15-16, 2010 at the Farm and Ranch Club in West Houston. The MacLeod tent was manned by Douglas Beaton, RVP of the South Central Region, and Gloria McLeod, Coordinator. It rained on Saturday but the Games are held inside a huge barn structure so plenty of shelter and the rain did not seem to affect the attendance a great deal. Sunday was a bright sunshiny day and we had good attendance then as well. We welcome Wayne and Brenda Barton, new members of the Clan MacLeod Society; and Bruce and Donna McCaskill who renewed their membership. A good time was had by all.
The Dunvegan Foundation of Clan MacLeod Society, USA, Inc., is the proud sponsor of the Houston Highland Games Mini Band Competition, which this year consisted of six competitors. Awards were given to the top three and they were: Silver Thistle Pipes and Drums, Austin, Texas, 3rd; Westminister Pipe Band, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 2nd; and St. Thomas Espicopal A-Band, Houston, 1st. The members of this band are Michael Hrncir, Jonathan Caro, Anthony Coulter, Joey Lewman, Nadar Girgawy, Kevin Yang. The Dunvegan Foundation also awards scholarships to students of St. Thomas Episcopal School who compete in Piping, Drumming and Dancing. The recipients of the Scholarships this year are: Piping - Alex Lubrano; Drumming - Will Doyle; and the Dancing Scholarship was divided equally between Anna Liisa Joki and Holly Probst. A special awards ceremony was held at St. Thomas Episcopal School on May 20 before the entire student body to recognize the recipients of these scholarships. These are very much appreciated and the students work hard to compete for these prizes.
