The
30th Arkansas Scottish Festival was held at Lyon College in Batesville,
Arkansas on April 17-19, 2009. The Clan MacLeod tent was manned by Tim and
Sarah Simpson, Commissioners for Arkansas, and Gloria McLeod from Houston.
There was a steady stream of visitors to the tents and to the activities on
the grounds, which included the usual piping, drumming, dancing and athletic
competitions.
Lyon College promotes the Scottish Cultures and teaches Highland Dancing
from Primary, under age 7, to Premier when they are eligible to compete at
Championships. Jack and Sue Stephens established the Agnes McLeod Stephens
Annual Scholarship through the Dunvegan Foundation in honor of Jack’s mother
several years ago and it was awarded this year to Colleen Rose. Later Jack
and Sue established the Jack and Sue Stephens Annual Scholarship and it was
awarded this year to Matthew Maier. The MacCrimmon Quaich is awarded each
year at this event as well and it was awarded to Nathanael Harvey who has
been the recipient of this award for the past two years. We are so proud
of these young people who compete each year for these scholarships and
award.
Jim Peckham renewed his and his brother John Peckham’s membership in the
Clan MacLeod Society.
It began to rain late on Saturday afternoon and bad weather was predicted
for Saturday night and Sunday. Many of us packed up and started home. We
hope for better weather next year.
Respectfully submitted,
Gloria McLeod
