THE ANNUAL 2008 SAN ANTONIO HIGHLAND GAMES
The San Antonio Highland Games and Festival was held at the Fairgrounds in Helotes, a suburb of San Antonio, on April 5-6, 2008. This event was preceded on Friday evening, April 4, with a wreath laying ceremony at the Alamo in downtown San Antonio to honor the Scots who died there fighting for Texas Independence. This very impressive ceremony is held annually with 22 Scottish Clan Societies participating in this year’s event.
The San Antonio Highland Games has attracted a good crowd each year and this year was no exception. The weather was ideal with sun and a cool breeze that blew through the four tents set up for the Stewarts, the MacLeods and the MacKays. There was a steady stream of visitors both days who were interested in their Scottish ancestry. They were assisted by Fred Stewart for Clan Stewart; Larry Sears and Gloria McLeod for Clan MacLeod; Amy Beaton and Enola Harrington for Clan MacKay. Phillip Lovelady visited the MacLeod tent and renewed his membership in the Clan MacLeod Society.
This Games provides a host of Celtic entertainers, singers, dancers and bagpipe bands, a parade of Scottish dog breeds, sheep dog trials, Highland athletics, and a multitude of merchandise, food and drink vendors. They also feature Thor! The World’s largest War Horse. You can see his picture at www.sahga.org.
